PEFC -certified Finnish forestry 2002: Metsahallitus clearcuts ecologically valuable old-growth forest inhabited by endangered flying squirrel

In 1994: "Majority of the Hämeenvaara forest has remained almost in its natural state... a considerable amount of exceptionally valuable old-growth forest rich in broad-leaves and dead wood can be found in the area.." A report by Metsahallitus 1994

In 2001-2002: the whole area was fragmented by clearcuts.

Tens of threatened and old-growth forest indicator species had been found from the area. One of the findings was endangered Flying squirrel. Finnish environmental NGOs Finnish Nature League and Greenpeace tried to stop the loggings with peaceful demonstrations in the summer and autumn of 2001 and in the winter of 2002. Metsahallitus finished the clearcutting with the help from police.

Finnish old-growth destruction is certified by PEFC. Clearcutting in ecologically valuable old-growth forests in Hameenvaara-area is once again a new example of weak ecological and social criteria of PEFC.

StoraEnso bought the wood despite of the presence of threatened species and other ecological values.
