K-1. Hammasvaara, Kuhmo

Finding: old-growth forest logging planned.

Hammasvaara is a state-owned old-growth forest area situated in the eastern border zone between Finland and Russia. A logging plan of about 10 hectares has been made for the spring of 2001. The landscape ecological plan carried out by the Forest and Park Service (FPS) protects less than half of the old-growth forest area from logging. The preserved forest consists of small fragments spread over a large area. The most recent logging took place in the spring of 2000 and was criticized by the regional environmental authorities for destroying the ecological connections. The planned logging will cause further fragmentation.

Source of information: the FPS Timber Catalogue 38, logging maps by the FPS, field trips.

Probable buyers of the timber: UPM-Kymmene, StoraEnso.
