Finding:
logging planned in a forest of high conservation value
The Forest
and Park Service is planning to log in a state-owned forest of high
conservation value. The forest has been classified as a "forest
of special environmental value" in which forestry operations
are claimed to aim at the enhancement of biodiversity.
The logging
will take place in old spruce forests inhabited by the regionally
threatened three-toed woodpecker (Picoides tridactylus). Other
characterists of semi-natural old forests can also be found, for example
the lichen species Lobaria pulmonaria. Logging is planned for the
winter of 2001. Environmental NGOs and ornithologists have expressed
their concerns on the logging.
