Anything goes? PEFC certified Finnish forestry: new case studies

>>> Hevosvaara, Pelkosenniemi

Finding: old-growth forest logging allowed, reindeer herding harmed.

The Hevosvaara old-growth forest was fragmented with 40 hectares of clearcuts in February - March 2001. The area was of great importance for reindeer herding since the forests were spruce-dominated and rich in arboreal lichen.

According to an inventory made by biologists of the Forest Service, the forest hosted several old-growth forest indicating species, such as capercaillie (Tetrao Urogallus), three-toed woodpecker (Picoides tridactylus), Lobaria pulmonaria, Phellinus populicola and endangered Haploporus odorus. Hevosvaara is included in the Protection Program for Old-Growth Forests in Northern Finland as an area whose ecological value should be preserved by the Forest Service.
