Anything goes? PEFC certified Finnish forestry: new case studies >>> Sundsberg, Kirkkonummi Finding: high conservation value forest logging allowed In the autumn of 2000 and the spring of 2001 a large construction and investment company has logged tens of hectares of forests in an area that hosts several endangered and specially protected Flying squirrels. According to the local environmental authorities, the logger was informed of the importance of the area in advance, but the logging was carried out as planned. Some of the loggings were carried out without adequate permits. Old aspen-trees were felled despite their great importantance for flying squirrels. The significance of the aspens had been especially stressed to the logger by environmental authorities. Metsaliitto group bought the wood and according to its own announcement, wood procecurement from the forests in question will continue. |
